What key exchange solution does ThreeBNB use?
We use smart locks with automated per-guest codes on every managed property. Codes are generated by Staytive (our property management software) when a booking is confirmed, activated at check-in time, and expired automatically at checkout. Guests receive their code in a pre-arrival message 24 hours before arrival.
Why not use a combination lockbox?
Combination lockboxes work for occasional rentals, but at any real booking frequency they create operational risk. In Calgary and Edmonton winters, outdoor lockboxes freeze at -25°C. Codes should be changed between every guest but often aren't. There's no audit trail. Smart locks solve every one of these problems at a modest hardware cost.
What happens if a guest is locked out?
Our guest ops team is available 24/7 with a four-minute response SLA. Most lockouts are resolved remotely — resending the code, checking the lock's battery status, or confirming the entry instructions. For genuine hardware failures, we have a backup access protocol at every property.
Can I choose my own smart lock?
For properties we onboard, we specify compatible smart lock models and handle installation coordination. Common models we work with include Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, and August. Compatibility depends on your door type and any building restrictions on lock modifications.
Does the key exchange solution work for condo buildings with fob access?
Yes. During onboarding, we coordinate secondary access solutions for building lobby doors, parkades, and common areas. This typically involves a lockbox in a secured lobby location for the fob, or integration with building concierge services where available.
